Icelandic Notes for the Weltgeist”

Sim Gallery. Reykjavik, Iceland 2018.

Icelandic Notes for the Weltgeist/ SIM Residency Project.

During the SIM Residency program Paul produced a body of assemblage sculptures from found objects collected while walking within Iceland. These compositions were photographed as still life works in studio conditions and incorporated into a small edition of hardbound artist books.

Working between traditions of natural history illustration (specimen object), still life (inanimate subject) and found object assemblage (subjective object / constructed subject), the body of work continued practice-led research. Taking inspiration from the histories of natural science, nature based spiritualties, and ecological philosophy; the work attempted to playfully engage with art and ecology through propositions of nature as non-binary, land spirits and the absurd (weird) to tell ecological stories of place.
